Jihad paranoia

The first sign of a country’s descent into fascism is the type of paranoia that appears in comments such as “Third jihad” (letter to the editor, Sept. 1), alleging that a Muslim “third jihad” is erupting in the Middle East and will be exacerbated by a Kerry victory.

This is the “clash of civilizations” theory. To test its validity, let us return to the 1980s. Reagan and his neo-fascist cronies waged a war against Central Americans, mostly Catholics, including using money from an arms sale to Iran to fund the mercenary contras in Nicaragua and producing millions of refugees in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Does this mean America is a Muslim nation oppressing Christians across the world?

The Christian world has shown its benevolence through hundreds of years of imperial dominance and plunder, including slaughtering untold millions of Native Americans.

What American foreign policy is fundamentally concerned with is ensuring American corporate hegemony, simultaneously crushing the needs of ordinary Americans and billions abroad? Immediate pullout and engagement with moderates in the Middle East is necessary if we want to avoid a catastrophe like a “third jihad.” The current policy practiced by Democrats and Republicans emboldens those who would wish to repeat Sept. 11.
