Jeff Pelline: Let’s revisit Airport Plan

Would you like some sushi with your Piper?

I’m not talking Piper champagne; I’m talking Piper aircraft.

No kidding. As our story on page A1 states, a sushi bar is being suggested as a venture that could help make western Nevada County’s airport more profitable.

This seems farfetched.

The airport should take a harder look at its costs, including the size of its staff and a planned salary and benefits increase. It also might revisit its ambitious expansion plans.

From the 35,000-foot perspective, why not get more serious about creating an airport district, much like the Truckee-Tahoe Airport?

Another idea: Instead of proposing sushi bars and courtesy cars, ask whether this a business that our county should be in. Maybe it’s time to look for a good private operator.

Whatever the solution, the ideas being proposed in the Nevada County Airport Business Plan seem unrealistic, given the challenges the airport is facing.
