Isn’t this what ‘we’ asked for?

I’ve been reading with interest your opinion column the past few days dealing with Highway 49 and the commuter nightmare so many of us deal with daily. I seem to recall that a few years ago, the Nevada County Transportation Commission had various options as to how “we” might address the congestion issue you’ve mentioned.

If I’m not mistaken, the commission backed the idea to widen the existing Highway 49 route from Grass Valley to Auburn, rather than dive in headfirst and push for an alternate route. One seemingly logical path to me has always been a connector from the Penn Valley area through to Lincoln. I, however, have an apparently different logical standard than the commission.

If my memory serves me, the commission’s decision to support the widening of the existing Highway 49 corridor was made at least in part as an effort to encourage people from Auburn to travel to Nevada County to shop. The idea seemed absolutely ludicrous to me then, and no wonder. With the development of a shopping “paradise” in nearby Roseville, people will naturally head that way. Their coming to Grass Valley and Nevada City to shop is about as likely to happen as water flowing freely uphill.

Does anyone else recall that decision, or have I lost my mind during the commute?
