In this season of mud slinging …

Ah, spring! When the rain falls gently on the freeway and the flowers spring to life. The same that moistens the soil so we can, once again, have a good stock of mud for the elections. I suspect it’s because Nevada County has been exporting all that mud for the use of the national campaigns.

Today I found comic relief in The Union. No, not on the comic pages; rather, in the classifieds. The paragraph which follows uses spellings learned from ads in The Union:

Paper in hand, I sat on the “balkeny” of my home enjoying the gentle patter of the rain. There was the occasional loud beat as a few big drops struck the sounding board of a camper “shall” on a pickup truck parked below. Odd, thought I; the truck is usually gone by now.

But not today. The owner left it parked. He was going to pick up some of the free fill dirt advertised in The Union but decided against it because he’d have to “hall” it himself and the hall of his apartment was already dirty enough.

I can understand “shall” … but “balkeny”?
