Army light infantryman-lifeguard Pfc. Matthew Wessels is one of more than 170 soldiers who has returned to Fort Drum, Watertown, N.Y., after being deployed to Sinai, Egypt. The returnees are regularly assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry).

The soldiers were members of Task Force 2-87, which served in Sinai for six months as part of the Multinational Forces and Observers mission to operate checkpoints and observation posts, conduct reconnaissance patrols, and perform aerial and ground-based monitoring functions. Wessels is the son of Larry R. Wessels of Grass Valley and a 2000 graduate of Bear River High School.
