In the service – Barton, Swanson-Cades

Army Spc. Travis Barton has deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom to engage in military operations involving U.S. and coalition forces. Operation objectives include liberating the Iraqi people, preserving Iraq as a unified state, keeping its territorial integrity intact, and helping the Iraqi people begin the process of economic and political reconstruction. Active duty, reserve, and national guard members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces are participating in the operation.

He is the son of Linda Barton of Grass Valley and Bill Barton of Penn Valley.

Barton is a 1997 graduate of Bear River High School.


Tami Swanson-Cades has graduated from the Army ROTC (Reserve Officers’ Training Corps) Leader Development and Assessment Course, also known as “Operation Warrior Forge,” at Fort Lewis, Tacoma, Wash.

Swanson-Cades is the daughter of Julie Cades of Nevada City and Mervin Swanson of Grass Valley.

She is a 2000 graduate of Nevada Union High School.
