‘I’m too young to die – I’m only 13!’

As I read a recent newspaper account of Israeli families mourning for members killed in Middle East violence, I felt a deep sadness. The longer both sides follow the violence-revenge pattern, the longer will grow the list of “forever 13’s,” such as Koby Mandell, the 13 year-old Israeli boy killed in May near a Jewish settlement.

Moshe Dayan, former defense minister of Israel, said, “We are the generation of the colonizers . . . Israel must see the sword as the main instrument to keep its morale high… Toward this end it may – no, it must – invent dangers, and to do this, it must adopt the method of provocation and revenge.”

The settlements are a provocation of violence and trigger the revenge cycle. Palestinians see in the relentless seizures of their lands for Jewish settlements the death of their hopes for a state of their own.

The idea of trading land for peace seemed, at one time, to hold promise. But the burgeoning Israeli settlements indicate that, instead of land for peace, Israel is more willing to trade blood for land.

Until the violence stops on both sides, the more Israeli and Palestinian “forever 13’s ” will die, and families on both sides will mourn.
