Hurtful misinformation

Freedom of speech sometimes means inaccurate and hurtful information is published. But God Bless America – I can respond. Regarding our Relay For Life’s “lack of patriotism”:

• 10 a.m. opening ceremonies included several patriotic tributes: The presentation of colors, a trumpet solo of our national anthem with the audience singing, and finally a performance of “America the Beautiful.”

• To suggest that attendees were “subjected” to a dance troupe makes it sound like entertainment viewing was mandatory. It wasn’t, and there were many places to be away from the stage.

• There were 24 hours of free and diverse entertainment. No individual will love every performance, but don’t condemn the event.

• Those performing in the Bedouin Dance Troupe are Americans.

• Bedouin dancing is an art form, not a political statement.

Why didn’t the complainer who wrote to The Union go to organizers at the event to express his concern? Maybe then someone could have told him that there were patriotic tributes. It was cowardly and potentially damaging to a fine and charitable event for him avoid contacting organizers and instead take his inaccurate thoughts to the public via the local paper.
