Hostels unpleasant

This is in reply to a recent suggestion that the Grass Valley/Nevada City area needs an international youth hostel. I’ve done my share of hosteling, and for the most part I found them dirty, crowded and noisy. My last experience was in Flagstone, Arizona, where drunk young men from Amsterdam in the next room started fighting. The fight went on and off for hours without interference and put two of the men into the hospital. The younger women in the room with me were terrified.

No one slept, and the danger from violence was very real. Grass Valley already has a B&B, Annie Horan’s, where for $30 a traveler can rent a bunk in a beautiful Victorian house, clean and with a clean bathroom. The owner, Maury Horn, has four beds available. He decided to do this to make Grass Valley more affordable to budget travelers.
