‘Horrific’ here in U.S.

Walter Faber

Pull your heads out of the sand, folks. While the treatment of Iraqi prisoners is unacceptable, it is not horrific.

As a sheriff’s deputy working South Central L.A. for 13 years, I witnessed “horrific.” Murder, rape, torture and other unspeakable cruelties were a daily occurrence. I am haunted to this day by visions of man’s inhumanity to man.

These atrocities are repeated, day after day, in large and small communities across our nation. Where is the public outcry to end these despicable acts? Why are photographs of these horrors not splashed across the front pages of our newspapers and on our television screens?

News reporters on television asking psychiatrists how they are to explain the embarrassment of Iraqi prisoners to their children, as if these revelations will scar their children for life. Not to worry. If the carnage in our American streets continues, your children will not only be exposed to “horrific” first hand, they will be afforded the opportunity to live or die through the experience of being a victim.

I pray to God that this will not happen, but then there is reality. Even here in our sleepy foothill community.
