Honest voter registration good for local parties, good for the country

As the former chair for Voter Registration of the Nevada County Democratic Central Committee, I was appalled to read about voter registration forms being altered. Changing any information on an individual’s voter registration card deserves not just a complaint filed by our Elections Office, but charges drawn against the perpetrators. It is a felony punishable by up to four years in prison to knowingly fill out your voter registration form incorrectly, and there should certainly be equal (if not worse) punishment for those who knowingly change the information you provide.

Before the Nevada County Democrats send our volunteers out to register voters, we make it clear that registering voters not only serves their local party, but, in fact, serves their country. I personally have never felt as patriotic as when I register voters, whether Democratic, Republican, or “Decline to State.” It may sound strange, but I am proud to say that about 10 percent of our registrations last year were from parties other than the Democratic Party, which means that I helped all kinds of folks fulfill their American duty to vote.

Attention voters. When you fill out that voter registration form, make sure that the person helping you signs and provides a phone number by which to contact them on the bottom tag, and then gives you that tag. That tag not only has the signature of the person who helped you, but also the phone number of our local Elections Office and the reference number for your individual form, in case you have any trouble getting your card.

With an important election coming up in November, we can only hope that this horrible event won’t discourage our citizens from registering to vote. Remember, it’s patriotic to vote – make your voice heard. See you at the fair.
