Highway 49 advice

I remember when I was 16, my father taught me and my brothers how to drive. Before Dad let us fire up the family car, he asked us (at the time seemed stupid):

“What is the first thing you have to remember before you get in the car and drive?”

“The keys!”

“Check the oil? Buckle your seatbelt? Make sure we locked the house? Air in the tires? Make sure you haven’t been drinking? Etc, etc, etc.” We took turns giving a wrong answer.

“No … Nope … No … Nope.” Is all my father would tell us for every possible answer.

“OK, Dad! Quit screwing with us and tell us what we need to remember before getting in the car!” I demanded. Dad looked at us all for a quiet 30 seconds.

“The first thing you have to remember before you drive anywhere is … people are stupid.”

So, if some of you are working, or pondering on solutions to improve “Highway 49” …

Let’s remember who helps makes 49 safer. I salute and give recognition to our Highway Patrol and I guess CalTrans. They keep us in between the lines and put us “stupid people” in line.
