High-speed chases

Hans Shillinger

I drove past several “Men Working” signs and a number of PG&E trucks early the other morning on my way to work. The crew was supporting a broken power pole that leaned precariously over the road while replacing it with a new one.

There were orange paint and skid marks all over the road for about 200 yards. Obviously a car accident had caused the damage, and over the next several days I wondered just how such an accident could have spread skid marks and debris over such a large area.

[The Union’s] article on a high-speed chase that began with a traffic violation in Grass Valley and ended with no suspect and a cop car at the base of a power pole seven miles away revealed the reason. There is a bill working its way through the California Legislature concerning restrictions on high speed chases of criminal suspects by police. The Union published an editorial questioning the bill’s wisdom.

After reading about the chase that ended so close to my home, on a narrow, winding road with steep banks that my wife and two small sons travel several times daily, I find myself agreeing with the bill’s authors.
