He’s no Reagan

Whether or not Nevada County Republican Central Committee Chairman Tony Gilchrease used bullying tactics in May to prevent a supposed antiwar group from meeting in a room commonly available to all kinds of nonprofit groups through the office of the county superintendent of schools, one thing is certain. His overreaction was reprehensible, unconstitutional, smacking of censorship of speech, and a mean-spirited machination.

Underhandedly recruited through his email, Gilchrease’s henchmen intimidated Terry McAteer by phone, and he had to shut the meeting room out of fear, the story goes, which forced the meeting to a local park. Gilchrease’s action was a nasty, hate-filled and brutish act.

Republican apparatchiks are proud and quick to maintain the Republican Party is the party of principles and are staunch defenders of the Constitution. Yet, some in the party hold the view that only Republicans have constitutional rights. Gilchrease’s actions show that other groups that may hold views anathema to the Republicans, real or imagined, should have fewer rights. In Gilchrease’s political playbook it’s obviously OK to trample on the constitutional right of a people to peacefully assemble.

Yes, Reagan was a truly great leader. Gilchrease is no Reagan. And Nevada County deserves so much better.
