GV: From the past for the future

Welcome to Grass Valley. No Grass, No Valley, No History.

It is sad to see the city of Grass Valley diminish history as if this town never had roots.

The city is proposing tearing down the old Gra Neva Building, the last standing Nevada County Narrow Gauge Railroad building, to construct a convention center but that is why we have the fairgrounds.

The city wants to bulldoze old mining land and ruins to industrialize. North Star, Loma Rica and Whispering Pines are all rich in mining history.

Most of the families in this area moved here to get away from the city. To show and teach their family and friends about the unique historical buildings, the once gold-filled mines and the rolling acres of beautiful green pine trees.

If you want the city go there, do not let Grass Valley become little Sacramento. This town has enough vacant buildings; we need to use the ones we have before we destroy history.

What will we have to show our children? Will we tell them, “Here is a plaque where a Nevada County Narrow Gauge building once stood?”

The future of Grass Valley lies in our hands. Only we can save our past. It is up to us to preserve the history of Grass Valley. We need to do better. Grass Valley wants to industrialize and Nevada City tries hard to preserve. Let us not leave our children only plaques. Let’s be able to show them the original buildings.

Fellow citizens of Grass Valley, I plead with you, if you love where you live, rally together and attend city council and historical society meetings. Let the future know we cared!

Help save the Gra Neva building! Call 274-4319 for a schedule of meetings.
