Growth solution for 49

Brian Lowenthal

The best way to reduce the traffic fatalities on Highway 49 is with a cement barrier down the middle. This approach has worked quite well on a much worse highway, Highway 17 thru the Santa Cruz Mountains.

The CHP has proven that it takes at least three tickets before the average driver will change the way he or she drives. Has anyone studied when and why accidents happen? Based on my informal research, growth did not have much to do with the accidents.

Another solution is increased growth. The more people that pour into this area, the more congested the highway will become and the slower the overall speed will be. Rush hour will become longer.

Everyone says “slow down!” Increased traffic will have that effect. Increased housing will boost the economy and maybe get people to stick around longer in this area to shop.

If it takes longer to get to Roseville, then maybe people will look harder in their own back yard for the products they need.
