Gracie’s Christmas Tree …

The Union StaffGrace MacKenzie thought she wasn't getting a tree this holiday.
ALL | GrassValleyArchive

‘Twas the week before Christmas and no one was home

When up at the neighbors, came a crack and a groan

Then a long drawn out “what was that?” from creatures all

around

And a thundering crash, though no one heard the sound

Not a window was broken, but the roof’s not all right

The rafters all held as I worked through the night

moving buckets and tarps and assessing the leaks

until help came in the morning and cut down the trees

Now my roof will be plastic all winter, I’m told

The drywall will blister and there may be mold

But in spring they’ll come back and make everything new

Till then, all is well, though severely askew

Another tree fallen, one of many as you’ve heard

Winds of change speaking clearly with ‘nary a word

Thanks for your love and support in my life

Happy Holidays Anyway, and to All Much Delight!

Two weeks later, still leaking, still dripping, still wet

Can’t even see all the damage just yet

Still emptying buckets, still getting new leaks

I’ll be moving four rooms into storage next week

There is wood for two winters, it just needs to be cut

The remodel could be fun, if it doesn’t drive me nuts

Looks to be a long wet winter, and who knows what’s next?

Letting go, Letting God, is what seems to work best

Life is fired point blank, and ready or not

We can call it illusion or sinister plot

Who can say what’s the meaning in my life, but me?

I give thanks for this house, and God’s Grace, and this tree.
