Governor’s bad idea

It’s interesting that Gov. Schwarzenegger’s California Performance Review hedges its “cost savings” recommendations of eliminating county school superintendent positions with the words ” … the size and population of California may require some intermediate level linking the 1,000-plus local school districts with the California Department of Education … ”

Eleven regional superintendents, as recommended, with a staff of “intermediate level” links leaves the door open for creating another bureaucratic empire that effectively destroys local control. For example, if each of these eleven superintendents appointed four “intermediate link” assistants, we’d be pretty close to the 58 superintendents currently serving in California and we’d lose local control.

I believe that Schwarzenegger’s job performance as governor is an improvement over his predecessor. But I believe he is glaringly superficial; that he lacks the ability to think beyond the surface of a given idea or recommendation. This idea of creating a body of eleven regional superintendents has all the earmarks of further centralizing governmental control.

Dr. Terry McAteer’s comments (“Will state cut school chief?,” The Union, Aug. 25) reflect the wisdom of his experience in education and his knowledge of how government works – or doesn’t. I hope he’ll keep us apprised regarding this important issue.
