Government should be referee

My thanks to Rev. Thelander for his comment on the difference between socialism and a free enterprise system which is capable of responding to the evolving needs of its citizens. As reported in the census, the rich are getting richer and the poor, most notably our children and grandchildren, are getting poorer.

In a corporate society, we need government at all levels to act as a referee, preserving the legitimate rights of individuals and families. Recent Supreme Court rulings expanding the rights and influence of corporations makes that ever so much more critical if democracy is to survive in America. And it for this reason that I don’t understand the actions of so-called conservatives.

Under lofty, but contrived, banners of “Patriotism,” “Freedom,” “Responsibility,” and “Capitalism,” they join hands with corporations and conservative influence peddlers, the very forces whose actions make a mockery of conservative values.

If America collapses, it won’t be from too little capitalism. It will be from the disintegration of the family and the values of peace and cooperation that family life brings to our society.
