GOP support of marriage correct

Molly Ivins’ opinions in her column, “Actions of Bush administration are bad news for women,” are both misconstrued and biased.

She criticizes Bush’s decision not to give $34 million to the U.N. for contraceptives and family planning around the world. Instead, the president is allowing $100 million to promote marriage in our country. What’s better, spending $34 million for “800,000 induced abortions” or $100 million on trying to lower our staggering divorce rate?

She also cites that “sex education is entirely about the consequences of ‘exploring sexuality'” and attributes the 11 percent decline in abortion because of it.

As a recent graduate from high school, I can assure her that putting contraceptives on sex toys doesn’t teach consequences.

Ivins also shows that the world population reached 6 billion in 1999 and will reach 13 billion by the middle of the 21st century. Both India and China have a population of over 1 billion.

By her same statistic, by that time, one third of the world population will also be Indian and Chinese.

Ivins downplays homeland security and disregards the situation in the D.C. area to call water scarcity, climate change and population growth as the “real threats.”

I fail to see how wasting $34 million tax dollars on abortions in Nicaragua is going to stop North Korea, Iraq, or other terrorists from detonating a chemical, biological, or nuclear weapon in the U.S.
