Give children tools for healthy choices

Supervisor Horne should be applauded for standing up for our kids. Statistics show that risk-elimination messages, such as abstinence until marriage, is the primary reason fewer teens throughout America are choosing to become sexually active.

Further statistics indicate that risk-reduction messages, such as those recently approved by the Nevada County Board of Supervisors, have had limited success. The failure of these programs is largely due to the fact that during the first two years after a teen becomes sexually active, they do not use contraceptives consistently, thus providing a false sense of security.

We need to go beyond simply addressing pregnancy and STDs and get to the foundation of why most teens become sexually active to begin with. We need to address the emotional aspects such as how becoming sexually active can affect a young person’s self-esteem. Let’s talk about how giving in to the pressures of sex affect one’s character. Let’s show them how the choices they make today can impact who they’ll become tomorrow.

We are doing our children a grave injustice when we say, “They’re going to do it anyway.” Lets give our kids the tools they need to make healthy choices, both physically and emotionally.
