Future of Nevada County courthouse

As merchants and the City Council work toward keeping the courthouse in downtown Nevada City, I am struck by the utter disregard and short-sightedness of such a decision.

The Administrative Office of the Courts (AOC), the group that administers the state court system, has no interest in renovating the current courthouse building and could end up tearing down Nevada City Elementary School for the new court building, if that site is chosen.

This decision would have a devastating impact on the surrounding neighborhoods and will congest/block one of only two main thoroughfares through town (the other being Broad Street, an already highly congested street).

The downtown merchants, who desperately want the court building to stay in downtown Nevada City, will come and go as we have witnessed over the years. The neighborhoods are here for the long haul.

Don’t let a small group of people make a bad choice for the rest of us and ruin our downtown.

If you love the quaintness, charm, and historic significance of Main Street and other downtown neighborhoods, please let the City Council know that you do not want NCE torn down to make way for an 80,000-square-foot, five-story concrete building.
