Freedom of the press

When I saw the “banned” cartoons on page A4 of Tuesday’s paper, I was surprised. I thought the Islamic fanatics had effectively quashed them from even small-town papers like ours. And the pusillanimous press is unwilling to condemn them for their violent actions. Except for Jeff Ackerman. Bravo. When Rolling Stone printed a front cover of a rapper as Christ with a crown of thorns, I thought it in very poor taste. But it is their right to print it and my right not to buy it. It is not my right to attack their staff or bomb their building. As the apocryphal quote from Voltaire so aptly states, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” I applaud Jeff’s stance and his courage.
