Free-market system disease eating U.S.

“Within each institution are the seeds of its own destruction.” In view of what has been happening lately in the free-market system (aka capitalism), it appears that the seeds are beginning to take root, not only in the U.S., but throughout the globe. All one has to do is to read the mainstream press and/or watch the news on TV and witness the greed, corruption, arrogance and contempt that the top management of huge corporations has for its workers and shareholders and the terrible financial losses these people have suffered.

Although we hear very little about how widespread is this “disease,” but on a smaller scale it is also occurring to several major corporations in Europe, Japan and elsewhere. Some of our would-be press pundits, Wall Street economists and politicians, including our president, would have us believe that what is happening to our economy is merely a temporary aberration. Now, all we have to do is to have Congress pass a few more, not-so-stringent laws, throw a few CEOs in a clubhouse (sic) jail for a couple of years, and all will be right with the economy. This is a Band-aid treatment for the ailing economy and sure to fail.

What appears evident is that our economic trouble is not the result of the behavior of a few bad apples, but this condition is inherent in the profit system itself. In my reading of history, I learned from such great men as Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and many other honorable men and women that the profit system poses a great danger to the future of our great democratic and humane society.

But much worse, again, history has borne out that inherent in this capitalist system is the tragedy of war. In my lifetime, the U.S. has been involved, directly and indirectly, in nine wars.

In the final analysis, I believe that people must be much better informed and act upon this knowledge and ultimately replace this bankrupt system with a government truly of, by and for the people.
