For the Public: Sonja Kish, Nevada City

Where I work: Nevada County Recorder’s Office

My job title: Recorder’s Assistant

What I do in my job: Record official documents, issue certified copies of vital records, marriage licenses, fictitious business names, perform civil wedding ceremonies, and more.

Why my job is important to the public: At some point in our lives, we all need access to our records, whether to prove identity, ownership of real property, or such. We’re here to preserve those records and help you obtain them when needed.

The special skills and talents I bring to my job: Since the documents we handle affect people’s lives and become history, I take it very seriously, while also keeping in mind the human aspect. It is very important to me that everyone coming in gets a smile, compassion, and excellent service.

The best part of my job: I get to work with an awesome team of professionals and meet interesting people in a community that I love. This job is ever changing and every day is different, so it never gets boring.

How I got my job: I set a goal of getting a job for Nevada County, so I took a course with R.O.P. and became an intern. That gave me the experience that I needed to get my foot in the door. When this position came up, I literally ran for an application. I’m grateful everyday that my supervisor gave me a chance.

How long I’ve been working here: Just 5 months, so I’m still the new gal.

My hobbies: I’m a knitter. It is such a therapeutic, creative outlet. I’m tickled that a whole new generation is discovering knitting, to the point of it becoming trendy. It isn’t just for Granny anymore.

My dream vacation: Europe. Especially Paris. I want to see the Eiffel Tower both in daylight and lit up at night.

If a movie were made of my life, I would be played by: Miss Piggy.

The people who have made the biggest difference in my life: My loving, supportive parents. My sweet Grandmother with her inestimable strength of spirit. My beloved brother. My precious, brilliant children who are an inspiration to always strive to be better and set a good example, and last, but definitely not least, my rock, my fiancé Dan.

I like living in Nevada County because: We’re not only blessed with beautiful surroundings, so rich in character, but this such a warm and welcoming community. I love the people here. It is home. It’s where my heart is happy.
