Where I live: Lake Wildwood for 16 years and downtown Penn Valley soon.

My job title: Secretary-clerk for the Penn Valley Fire Protection District.

What I do in my job: Ambulance billing, attend board meetings, help people, answer phones, lots of public contact, all aspects of office work.

Why my job is important to the public: I’ve helped many people when they don’t know who to call – from cats in trees, how to get hold of the police (which Penn Valley doesn’t have), to calming people down when they come to the fire station instead of calling 911.

The special skills and talents I bring to my job: I’ve been in this county for a long time, raised my 20- and 21-year-olds, so I know quite a few people, and I have a lot of resources I’m able to help people with. My special skills would be good public relations.

The best part of my job is: When the elderly people call me regarding an ambulance bill they don’t understand, and I can put their fears to rest when I explain it to them. I’ve had people bring me cookies and candy for this.

A day at work I’ll always remember was … : When Scott Thorpe was shooting at the Lyon’s Restaurant and our chief at the time was the first person in as he is a peace officer, also. It was very scary and heartbreaking.

How I got my job: Answered an ad in The Union soon after we moved here.

How long I’ve been working here: Since August 1990.

My dream job would be: Probably this job with more ambulance billing, since I really enjoy that.

My family: My husband, Bill; daughter, Krista; and son, Brian.

My hobbies: Camping, fishing, getting together with good friends on weekends, reading, swimming, boating – anything around water.

When I was a kid, I … : Loved swimming and was almost on the Junior Olympics diving team.

My dream vacation: Anywhere warm and by a beach. I love snorkeling.

If a movie were made of my life, I would be played by: Sandra Bullock, because she can be nutty like me.

The people who have made the biggest difference in my life: My family.

My hero: My father, who gave me my compassion and humor.

The best book I’ve read lately: “California Gold” – it refers to places from the Gold Rush days that are still in Nevada City.

I like living in Nevada County because … : What’s not to like? Trees, water, it’s just so beautiful.
