First Amendment and religion

The quotes of Washington, Jefferson, Clay, Lincoln and Grant are not in The Constitution. The words do indicate the reason for the wording of the First Amendment.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion … ” (the Founding Fathers did not want the government to establish a particular religion to the exclusion of all others. That’s what they were leaving behind in England) … “or prohibiting the exercise thereof” (they did not want Congress to suppress religion in any way).

Having said that, the U. S. Supreme Court is allowing the suppression of all expression relating to religion.
