Fine sled dog story

A friend forwarded your recent article about Barbara Schaefer and her team of sled dogs. I write a column for my mentor, Ray Gordon, who has run the Iditarod twice, and was impressed with your thoroughness and accuracy. The photos were a welcome source of information as well. Good job to both photographer and reporter.

Many folks who do not have any experience with animals, let alone a working breed like Siberian Huskies, often draw their own and, often times, erroneous conclusions about both the care that the musher extends to his (or her) team as well as the need “to work” for the dogs. I heard an older musher, and addressing a woman who had accused him of “making” his dogs run – he simply said “You can’t push a team with this (he was holding a limp lead line in his hand).

I was so glad to read your good coverage of a growing sport. It seems like Barbara is a fine representative of the new group of young and enthusiastic mushers all across the country and the world.
