FCAT’s doors open to all

I am a community producer at FCAT with a show that has been running for more than 21/2 years. This is my experience: When I was invited to do a show for another host, I gladly accepted, challenged by the interesting format of TV. From that experience, I started the process of putting together my own show.

With the help of the volunteer staff, I was encouraged and directed to start producing my show. I found another volunteer camera person who willing gave of her time to shoot the show. I asked questions, found support, and a complete willingness of volunteer staff to help in any manner they could.

I moved from a twice a week format to weekly, and once again, I found volunteers (including my teenage son) to help produce the show. FCAT staff and volunteers have been more than gracious with their time and energy. Miles (the current underpaid and highly enthusiastic executive director) has always been there to help me improve my show in so many different ways.

So I just don’t get it. All the complaining from some people when the door for producing a show is always open and the help is there, even with scarcity of money and equipment. It amazes me that we have such a resource that is so poorly supported and then diminished by a continual diatribe in the letters to the editor.

Yes, there are problems at FCAT, mostly due to lack of funds. Yes, equipment breaks and there is no money to repair it, but the attention to producing community TV is alive and well. Come and experience it for yourself. The door is almost always open!
