FCAT is an honorable effort and deserves support

I’m a 72-year-old retired media professional. I moved to Nevada County a year ago. I am interested in all forms of community access, particularly access by citizens to the community through cable television. I was delighted to find FCAT. I have helped edit and produce some programs. I have become familiar with other producers and with Miles Everett, the executive director. I have personally rebuilt the FCAT Web site, and I registered FCAT’s simplified Web address as fcat.tv. I have donated equipment to FCAT. I have attended FCAT board meetings and have had extensive discussions with board members.

FCAT is a wondrous example of voluntary community service. Frankly, it’s amazing that it is even on the air because the technical assets are so absolutely outdated, worn out and falling apart. Somehow, the volunteers keep it going and patch together things that constantly break, night and day. That’s a tribute to each of them, and particularly to Executive Director Everett, who puts up with the kind of daily problems that would send almost anyone packing.

FCAT is an honorable effort. It’s a voluntary, grass-roots effort. It needs and deserves a lot of help. Government should support it with the funds it gets from AT&T, the cable operator, who collects lots of money from us subscribers.
