Family center does good work

I am writing in response to the front-page article on the Mattson family on March 14. The article failed to mention the tremendous support and community generosity that was given to the family during the almost six months that they lived at the Manzanita Family Center. The normal stay at the center is 90 days. Terry Winters, the executive director, generously extended the Mattsons well beyond the 90 days generally allowed, due to their extraordinary needs.

During their stay at Manzanita, the staff gave tremendous time and energy to help meet the numerous needs of the family. Several churches and individuals made generous cash contributions. The family was also given tremendous support with Christmas gifts for the entire family.

Due to Manzanita’s savings plan, the family was able to save several thousand dollars in a trust fund at the center. The Nevada County Cal Works Department also granted them a $1,000 voucher towards the move-in costs for their next home.

Two local mechanics provided free automotive service and towing. VISTA volunteers from Sierra Nevada Children Services also provided hours of support to the children while they were at the center.

I would like to express my thanks to my fellow staff members, county agencies and the community at large for the generosity that is given to all residents at Manzanita Family Center.
