‘Faith and Suffering’

I want to express appreciation for the “Faith and Suffering” series featuring the journal entries of Bethany Gregory (online at https://www.theunion.com/uganda).

This fresh-faced young woman put off her marriage to work among suffering people in Africa for a short term. She also mentions having served in South America. Her fiance was serving elsewhere throughout this period.

This front page series shared space devoted to a series related to

meth addiction issues. In contrast, we read of people responsible for crime and death who have lost decades of productive living, remaining scared and struggling.

Any parent sees promise in their young child and desires to direct them on a path to a life that would influence others for good and leave a legacy of service and productivity. Bethany’s values spring from her faith, which she references throughout her journal. They are Bible-based; she graduated from the Bible Institute of Los Angeles.

Parents linking their children to the Bible have the advantage of seeing their children learn and grow spiritually, as well as experience application of their faith. Bible-teaching churches provide training in practical skills that enable young people to apply their faith.
