Expensive frivolity

Today I observed what appears to be an interesting contradiction. There is an article on Page 1 which bemoans diminishing county fair interest and attendance. This has been attributed to gasoline prices, high temperatures and all manner of trivia.

However, a letter from an astute reader which you printed on Page 6 gets to the real core of the matter. Starting with the abysmal and expensive parking situation, the cost of admission, the cost of the games and rides and the outrageous prices charged by the food concession operators, who can afford it?

I have written off the fair as an expensive frivolity, since I have a heck of a lot of other (and more enjoyable) things I would rather do with my hard-earned cash.
