Excellent production

As a theater and performance aficionado, I attend a lot of both in San Francisco and the foothills. On Saturday night I was privileged to be one of the delighted attendees of a performance of “Immortal Heart,” a story written by Amy Tan (the author of “Joy Luck Club”), at the Nevada Theater in Nevada City.

The Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra (CATS) hosted the Word for Word company from San Francisco’s Z Space Studio, which performs short works of written fiction literally “word for word,” including the “he saids” and “she declares,” with full theatrical staging. Everything about the production was excellent, from the acting to the costumes to the staging to the choreographed movement to the beauty of the written/spoken words.

Julia Cho, who played the young LuLing, was especially convincing and natural in her part. The story, although set in China in earlier years, delves into the universal issues of love, pride, hate, avarice, sorrow, and abuse, at the same time as relating a moving story with a surprise ending. I highly recommend this play, as well as supporting local theater. “Immortal Heart” will play again on February 2-5.
