Election problems

Karin Robinson, Karen Nicholas and Karen Winguth

This letter is to inform and respond to the walkout in the Elections Department. The temporary personnel discussed/observed problems prior to termination of the full-time employee. The termination was the “straw that broke the camel’s back.”

We were concerned about the lack of direction given by the clerk-recorder, which never occurred prior to our combined total of 24 elections. Expecting professionalism and knowledge from the clerk-recorder previously experienced, we were willing to work with her if she had asked or shown any interest in what the whole election process involved. She doesn’t even have the software on her computer to look to see if a person is registered.

Due to other problems in the office, not all absentee ballots were mailed out on time. Also, refer to the article in The Union on Oct. 5, “Absentee ballots mailed out; many featured blacked-out error.” It is the responsibility of the clerk-recorder to assure accuracy of ballots prior to printing and mailing.

These problems and lack of the clerk-recorder checking any outgoing work which she is responsible for culminated in our walkout.

We regret the action taken, but felt it necessary to expose internal problems.
