Educational tours at Rock Creek

Tours of the Rock Creek Nature Trail will be conducted by Tahoe National Forest employees during the next six Wednesday mornings beginning July 28. Tours will begin at the trailhead at 10 a.m. and last 1 1/2 to two hours.

Although some of the tour will be the same from week to week, a special emphasis for the day will be featured. Topics will include Native American and early pioneer history of the area, local birds, trees, soil, hydrology and wildlife.

The schedule of topics may change, but here is the current list:

• July 28 – Plants

• Aug. 4 – Soils

• Aug. 11 – Trees and fire fuels

• Aug. 18 – Hydrology

• Aug. 25 – Archaeology

• Sept. 1 – Birds and wildlife

To get there, drive six miles east on Highway 20 from Nevada City. Take a left onto the Conservation Road toward the California Youth Authority Camp and follow the road for about a mile.

At the Rock Creek Nature Trail sign, turn left onto a dirt road for another mile down to the bottom of Rock Creek. Watch for the parking lot on the right. Although the road is dirt in spots, it is accessible by passenger vehicles.

Parking is limited, so participants are asked to carpool if possible. Organizers also recommend bringing water and insect repellent.

Picnic tables are available for lunch after the walk. For additional information, call the forest headquarters at 265-4531.
