Educational rant

Re letter to the editor, “Not all black and white,” Aug. 11: The writer’s “rant” is educational. That he sees no “actual arguments” within Ms. Palmer’s piece [Other Voices, Aug. 5] is indicative of close-mindedness. He has obviously already decided what he wishes to believe.

If the liberation of 25 million people from a genocidal dictator who murdered well over 300,000 people is not enough to make this a just war, I suppose you would have opposed fighting World War II.

As for the weapons of mass destruction, two things of importance happened that were unreported. First was a convoy from Iraq to Syria shortly before the invasion of Iraq began (WMDs, anyone?). Second was an attempted attack using explosives and nerve gas on the U.S. embassy in Jordan (estimated casualties: 88,000-plus). Origination: Syria. As for al-Qaida ties, the suspects in the attempted bombing say they work for Zarqawi.

Utopian pacifist is indeed apt. Freedom was handed down, and they won’t acknowledge the hardship that it takes to achieve that freedom. If you believe that freedom is not worth fighting for, then you are, indeed, un-American.

Ms. Palmer, thank you. To those who support pullout: Pullout from Vietnam caused 1 million “re-educations” and 65,000 executions. Careful what you wish for.
