Drain the swamps

Be definition, old sayings have lasting wisdom. There’s an old saying. (Given Everglade destruction’s insensitive.) It just fits so well. It goes like this. “You can kill mosquitoes forever but they’ll just keep coming if you don’t drain the swamps.”

That’s a poignant fact in Nevada County, but here it’s a metaphor.

These “mosquitoes” whatever their beliefs and wherever they come from, are terrorists – of all kinds. The “swamps” are the pockets of poverty, ignorance, unemployment-underemployment, despair and hopelessness and breed terrorists both on our city streets and abroad.

Currently we’re spending hundreds of billions a year to kill mosquitoes while allowing the swamps to continue breeding new and bigger ones. We don’t spend one-tenth as much to drain the swamps.

Some see wisdom in this! Why, when by supporting in the swamps, at whatever cost necessary, the implementation of:

1. government and legal organization, administration and staffing.

2. the economic conditions for job creation.

3. a trained professional police force insuring basic rights, freedoms and basic security.

4. sanitation, utility, communication, and transportation infrastructure.

5. quality education for all; both academic and vocational

6. comprehensive human-services.

We could drain the swamps, be universally respected, and save money.
