Draft bill a sham

(The writer of a) Sept. 24 letter titled “Our kids going to war” writes, “Bill HR 163 is written and waiting for a vote.”

(The letter-writer) neglects to inform that the bill is sponsored by six Democrats, Charles Rangel (NY), Jim McDermott (WA), John Conyers (MI), John Lewis (GA), Pete Stark (CA), and Neil Abercrombie (HI). Their respective liberal rankings by Americans for Democratic Action are 85, 100, 90, 90, 100, and 95, with 100 being a “perfect liberal.”

Military leaders have repeatedly stated there is no personnel shortage and their preference for an all-volunteer force. So why would ultra-liberals sponsor a bill “To provide for the common defense by requiring that all young persons in the United States, including women, perform a period of military service or a period of civilian service in furtherance of the national defense and homeland security, and for other purposes” when it is clearly unnecessary?

The answer is simple: to give folks such as Mr. Hoffmann an excuse to write letters attempting to incite panic among the uninformed. The bill is a transparent ploy to make the president look bad and will never come to a vote.
