Don’t let GV annex North Star

Public discussion will intensify soon about how to develop 760 acres at the edge of Grass Valley. At numerous public hearings, individuals and special interest groups will present an array of proposals about how to develop the North Star property.

The best proposal is to not annex the land. Without annexation, the landowners have much less incentive to build because they would not have access to Grass Valley’s sewer system. Other proposals seek to limit the negative impacts of development. This proposal could eliminate those impacts.

We have seen uncontrolled growth erode the quality of life in so many communities that skepticism prevails. I see skepticism when people cut short a conversation about restraining growth because they don’t see it as a realistic possibility. It’s as if it hurts to talk about restraint because hope has been lost.

It can hurt to rekindle lost hope. However, in all of the talk about this project, even if it is just talk around your dinner table, please throw in the idea of not annexing North Star’s 760 acres.
