Don’t get taken by party scam Now wait a minute…

S.J. Alger

I just got a phone call, on a Saturday at 10 a.m. The person on the other end informs me I have won a “Republican of the Year Award” for my outstanding contribution to the Republican Party.

1. Red flag: I just came on board here (locally only) contributing my time and talent to the Republican cause. I have no extra dollars for a national effort, never sent any donations outside my county. Hmmmmmm …

2. There are lists of registered voters that you can purchase from the county for $37, with your stats and phone number and address. That must be where they got my name. Hmmm …

3. Anyone with a printer, scanner and computer graphics program can produce a realistic looking award.

4. The real kicker comes at the end of the conversation: For a mere (in this case) $450 membership contribution, I’ll receive my award in the mail. Hah! It would seem that if I (a Nevada County Republican) earned an award of such great importance, wouldn’t one of our Republican representatives present this award on TV or radio or something big like that? Beware folks! The scam artists are out in force, and they will continue to be throughout this voting season. My advice is, if you want to contribute to your party, do it locally and let your Republican (Demos, Greens, etc.) central committees forward the dollars to Washington.
