Do your homework before purchasing a dog

Did you watch the Westminster Dog Show? I guess a lot of people did because my phone has been ringing off the hook. The message is basically the same: “I want a dog like the one who won on TV.”

Josh, the Newfoundland who won Best in Show, represents 35 years of dedication on the part of Dave and Peggy Helming, his breeders.

If you follow televised dog shows, you probably saw these same breeders honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Eukanuba finals last year. No ethical breeder, even the Helmings, would think of promising anybody that their puppy will turn out looking like Josh when he or she grows up.

Please, dogs are not impulse items to be obtained in the checkout line at the store. If you’ve got your heart set on acquiring a purebred dog, do your homework. Research the breed(s) you’re interested in; go to dog shows and talk to responsible breeders. If you’re an Internet surfer, go to You can then jump over to the parent club of your favorite breed and get the real lowdown on that breed.

Don’t make a heartbreaking mistake. The shelter is full of them.
