Dismay on bike ban

The Other Voices column on the “bike ban on the ditch trail” caught my attention, and my reaction is dismay. I admittedly know nothing about this particular trail and the circumstances leading the Nevada City City Council to ban bikes there. However, as a person who greatly enjoys riding bicycles for exercise as well as fun, this decision is directionally wrong for our part of Nevada County.

We have no safe place to ride bicycles locally, particularly for those of us who find the single-track trails intimidating. Bicycle/automobile collisions are all too frequent, and although we occasionally attempt to ride some of the quieter roads nearby, our answer to the problem is usually to drive to Sacramento to use the beautiful and safe American River Parkway or to the Tahoe area to ride the equally pleasant and safe bike trail along the Truckee River and west side of Lake Tahoe.

My comments do not even start to cover the problem of children riding bicycles to school or adults riding bikes to work! Nevada County needs to begin to address this issue right away to encourage local bike riding.
