Different Watchdogs Needed

Over the past couple of years, the Nevada County Animal Shelter has been recieving complaints about animals adopted through FONCA (Friends of Nevada County Animals). FONCA is a nonprofit volunteer group that works out of the shelter. Complaints range from the group adopting out kittens with distemper, a highly contagious deadly disease, botched spay/neutering surgeries, and its “as-is” adoption policy.

It was requested at the Board of Supervisors meeting on Jan. 8 that an Animal Control Advisory Committee be set up to look into the adoption return policy of FONCA, discontinue the showcasing of FONCA-sponsored animals at the shelter, and to work on other animal control issues.

At the Board of Supervisor’s meeting on Feb 5, it was noted that 10 members of the community applied to serve on this committee. A motion by Supervisor Peter Van Zant to appoint Teresa Bryerton, the president of FONCA; Cheryl Wicks, a pro-FONCA volunteer at the shelter (determined from a letter to the editor dated July 30, 2001); Anna Drummond, the president of the Pet Adoption League, and two alternates, passed unanimously.
