Diaz deserves votes

The Bedwellian description of wild and scenic status as an issue between property rights and “control” by environmentalists misses key points: (1) Protection was sought primarily because our community lacked local control to stop outside development proposals to dam the Yuba for water sales to nonlocal customers; and (2) recreation dollars are vital to our local economy. A free-flowing Yuba attracts fishers, hikers, rafters, swimmers, and picnickers who support local businesses. The river’s health is both an environmental issue and an economic one. In supporting wild and scenic, Olivia Diaz has the well-being of our entire community in mind. She deserves our votes.
