Defending ‘liberal’

I fail to understand the derision toward those termed “liberals.” Many of our present moderate values were liberal ideas of yesterday. Our democratic republic itself was a “liberal,” indeed “radical,” idea at the time. Then consider Social Security, integrated schools, universal health care, women’s suffrage, equality in work places, labor union rights, workplace safety, interracial marriage, religious freedom including atheism (in most states); rights of women within a marriage, etc.

One dictionary definition defines “liberal” as “favoring proposals for reform, open to new ideas of progress and tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others; broad minded.” This clearly should describe all good citizens.
