Davis’ paid-leave bill bad news for budget

“Paid leave for parents” is a deficit time bomb. The bill signed by Davis provides for, amongst other things:

Paid leave for six weeks.

Workers to receive 55 percent of wages up to $728 a week.

Worker would pay about $27 per year.

About 13 million workers would be eligible.

State and local government workers not covered; they have a separate plan.

Maximum wages $68,848 at 55 percent equals $728 per week; cost to worker $551 per year. Total paid to worker, $4,368. Deficit, $3,817.

With 13 million workers with an average wage of $32,000 per year, the deficit would be: $338 a week paid to worker; cost to worker $256 per year. Total paid to worker, $2,028. Deficit, $1,772 per year.

Average annual deficit for 13 million workers would be $23 billion.

What would the additional cost be to administer this program? Taxpayers will be required to pay for this time bomb of $23 billion annually.

Above based on an article in The Union. The reported cost to workers of $27 per year may be incorrect.
