Dance scholarships awarded in memory of Laura Wilcox

An anonymous benefactor has set up a dance scholarship fund at the Penn Valley Academy of Dance in memory of Laura Wilcox, who was a longtime student at the academy.

The initial winners are Kalissa Bunnell, 8, and Fiona MacKenzie, 9, both of Penn Valley. Each received $500 to pursue dance studies at the academy.

“Originally just one winner was to be chosen,” said Caroll Christy, academy director, “but two students were so outstanding that I approached the benefactor and she agreed to double the scholarship amount.”

The young dancers were chosen based on their seriousness about studying dance, ability to take classes, and submission of a one-page paper.

The scholarship was set up as a memorial to Wilcox, who died in the Jan. 10, 2001, shooting spree in Grass Valley-Nevada City, and was a student at the academy for five years.
