Dam plan a threat

The Union’s article on the Lake Clementine Trail in the Auburn State Recreation Area (Feb. 16) coincided with an article in the Sacramento Bee noting that the same trail had been named in the annual Trails.com survey as the 10th best hiking trail in the nation. It is no wonder that this trail, together with the dozens of others in the Recreation Area, is enjoyed by tens of thousands of hikers, runners, equestrians, and bicyclists every year.

You also mentioned what most people don’t know: The just-won’t-stay-dead Auburn Dam proposal, which is the pet project of our congressman John Doolittle, would destroy nearly the entire recreation area. We would lose all the trails, the historic No Hands Bridge, river rafting on the American River, the ability to hold the annual Tevis Cup equestrian event and the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run, and the ATV/motorcycle area.

Outdoor enthusiasts, take note. John Doolittle is not our friend.
