Crash victim listed in critical condition

A Grass Valley woman injured in a Highway 20 crash near Smartville Nov. 12 remained in critical condition Tuesday at Sutter Roseville Medical Center.

Krystal Belmont, 22, suffered major head injuries and went by helicopter to the hospital. The other driver, 41-year-old Gabriel Cortez of Auburn, was treated for moderate injuries and arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 6:40 p.m. near Hammonton-Smartville Road, Cortez’s westbound Ford pickup collided with Belmont’s eastbound Ford Escort after he became distracted by food inside his vehicle, the CHP reported. The crash caused the Escort to burst into flames, and Cortez pulled Belmont from the car, according to the CHP.
